It records the 1615 visit of Archduke Albert (r. 1599-1621) and Archduchess Isabella (r. 1599-1633), co-regents of the Spanish Low Countries, to Van der Geest's townhouse adjacent to the river Scheldt. Willem van Haecht In the early seventeenth century, a new painting genre emerged in Antwerp: the representation of the "kunstkammer" or picture gallery. This painted picture gallery represents the collection of Cornelis van der Geest (1555-1638), one of the most prominent art collectors in Antwerp and a friend of Rubens. Willem II van Haecht’s panel of the Cabinet of Cornelis van der Geest (1628), introduces the viewer to the theme of the Five Senses by including five prominently displayed paintings, each corresponding to one of the senses, in the foreground.
